Just when you thought it was safe to live in Alaska... Universal Pictures is set to release a fact-based sci-fi thriller "The Fourth Kind" (no this is not a sequel to Close Encounters OF The Third Kind), based on an ongoing mystery in Alaska, where one town has seen a high number of unexplained disappearances over the past 40 years. As one would expect, the government is being accused of covering it all up. While watching the trailer and reading the synopsis of the film, what I found interesting is that they are using never -before-seen archival footage and integrating it into the film's story line. The trailer even makes mention of this, using Jovovich as herself to explain that the film is a “reenactment.” In 1972, a scale of measurement was established for alien encounters. When a UFO is sighted, it is called an encounter of the first kind. When evidence is collected, it is known as an encounter of the second kind. When contact is made with extraterrestrials, it is the third kind. The next level, abduction, is the fourth kind. This encounter has been the most difficult to document…until now. This provocative thriller is set in Nome, Alaska where - mysteriously since the 1960s - a disproportionate number of the population has been reported missing. Dr. Abigail Tyler (played by Milla Jovovich) began videotaping sessions with traumatized victims and unwittingly discovered some of the most disturbing evidence of alien abduction ever documented. The Fourth Kind exposes the terrifying stories of multiple witnesses and their accounts; of being visited by alien figures, all share disturbingly identical details, the validity of these claims are investigated throughout the film. The movie is set for release on November 6, 2009. This is one movie the E.A.R.P. team can't wait to see. For now enjoy the trailer and look for our review after the movie's release. FYI: The Fourth Kind," is a reference to scientist J. Allen Hynek's famous categories involving the sightings of UFOs. Close Encounters of the Third Kind also referred to this scale. According to promotional materials from Universal, the film is framed around a psychologist named Abigail Tyler who interviewed traumatized patients in Nome, but Alaska state licensing examiner Jan Mays says she can't find records of an Abigail Tyler ever being licensed in any profession in Alaska. Ron Adler, CEO and director of the Alaska Psychiatric Institute and Denise Dillard, president of the Alaska Psychological Association say they've never heard of Abigail Tyler. Hmmm...could this be the same type of promotional tactic used by Sony Pictures, for their end of the world scenario? If you're not sure what I'm referring to, I'll give you a brief rundown. Several months ago, the "IHC" (Institute For Human Continuity)launched a promo on MySpace, asking for everyone to take part in a "Lottery" to ensure your survival in the Post 2012 world. The ad and site had a very legitimate "feel" to it and it kind of had you wondering whether this was some stunt for a movie or something else. After registering and entering the lottery, you would be sent a link to print your lottery ticket (to see the movie), for safe keeping. The IHC website is still up and active check it out here . Movie Trailer and Site At any rate, whether or not the premise the Fourth Kind is based on actual cases or not, I have a feeling this movie will be interesting to watch. Then again it might just be that I'm easily entertained.
