Well for those of you who might have actually lived under a rock for the last two years, I'll be explaing the basic premise of the movie. The movie follows the lives of two people - Keanu Reeves, who plays Alex Wyler; a socialy closed off Architect and Dr. Kate Foster, an equally closed off character, played by Sandra Bullock. Now that I've established the movies main characters here's the basics: When the movie opens, Dr .Foster just finished her residency and is leaving her beautiful lake house and moving to Chicago to start her career. She leaves a note asking the next tenant to please forward her mail to her. This note is found by Alex as he's moving in. The message puzzles him because not only is the date on the letter wrong, it mentions things in the house that aren't there, like painted paw prints on the walkway to the house. As they correspond through the mailbox, leaving messages back and forth, they discover that they are somehow communicating through time. Alex is actually two years in Kate's past, to the day. If they are both at this mailbox, they can actually have a weird sort of instant message conversation, or leave a note and come back for the reply later. As time moves forward for them, day by day, but staying two years apart; writing to each other, they develop what has to be the ultimate long distance relationship. As the movie unfolds we watch their lives unfold and see this is just about the only way each of them would find someone they love. Kate is wounded by life, and keeps people at a "safe" distance. Alex has a driven, famous and award-winning architect father (Christopher "Star Trek 6" Plummer) who made it hard for Alex to connect with people as well. So as time moves forward; Alex and Kate fall for each other, the movie plays like a regular chick flick, with the addition of the time twist. It has all the drama, and sappiness of a regular chick flick. For those not into chick flicks, the movie will seem slow. But if you like plot and character development . . . it's still a little slow, but enjoyable. Anyway, although the movie does have some obvious plot holes; for example, why doesn't Kate just Google Alex and go find him? Why doesn't he meet her when he says he will? What exactly is allowing them to communicate like this? I have a theory, but it's a pretty major plot point, so I shall not spoil it. But if I'm right, it's very clever. I realize the Lake House was written to be a Romance Drama, but the obvious sci-fi hook of time-travel had me salivating when the movie was first released and had me salivating again when I saw it today on the Oxygen channel. I can imagine the snickering right now at the fact I was watching Oxygen, but consider the possibilities. I know, I know, as improbable as it all might sound. The very notion of time travel in any form either by physically transporting yourself to another time and place or by virtue of some mini-portal where you can communicate with someone, even yourself from the past or future - is to say the least intriguing. So my question and reason for bringing up the topic in the first place, is to get a little insight from you. 1. Do you believe, like einstein believed; that time travel is possible? Keep in mind some research, while not 100% conclusive, suggests it might be possible. 2. Supposing it were real and you could touch time like Dr. Kate and Alex; What would you do? what would you say? Who would you most want to talk to? 3. I'd love to hear if anyone has found any recent research being done on time travel.

So I realize the fact that I'm bringing up a little movie called the Lake House, might seem a tad off topic, if not several years late. But I have to tell you before you huff and puff, about my obvious deviation from the site's own rules. Just hear me out a minute. Okay so why am I bringing it up and didn't i see it when it came out, like way back in 2006? Yes, Yes I did and at the risk of having a few points taken off my man card, but by George I liked it! Okay so you're a wuss, so what does this movie have to do with sci-fi you say?
