What is an EVP?

The acronym EVP stands for Electronic Voice Phenomena – An EVP is defined as an event in which a human-sounding voice is heard from an unknown source on recorded media, radio static or other electronic media. More often than not, EVP’s are heard on recorded media and most often the voices are not heard at the time of the recording, but only when the recording is played back. In some cases amplification is needed to hear the voices, some require no amplification at all and can vary in gender(male-female), age (adult or child), tone and emotion. The voices heard in these recordings usually seem to speak in single-words, phrases and on occasion short sentences. They have also been heard speaking in foreign tongues, gibberish, singing, grunt, groans crying, and growls or other vocal noises. According to some researchers there have been cases where witnesses claimed to have heard the anomalous sounds over the telephone.

The common argument of course, is that these are more than likely crossover signals from another source, such as a CB Radio, cell phones or cordless phone.

I remember a couple of incidences I had when I was in High School, I must have been around 17 at the time and I was talking to a girlfriend on the phone and we could hear a couple arguing over the phone, we tried to let them know we were hearing their conversation, but they couldn’t hear us. While I can’t repeat everything we heard, I will say it provided a little entertainment for the duration of our conversation.

The next incident happened a few weeks after my 18^th birthday, I just had my phone service installed in my room, when I get a call one night, but when I answered; I realized that my number must have been dialed by accident, because I’m listening to a conversation between two women. It was, to say the least; an interesting conversation. At first they weren’t able to hear me, and while it was kind of fun hanging around in the background, without them knowing it, I decided to speak up again. Oddly enough they heard me this time. Although they were initially a little startled and freaked out, they took it in stride and allowed me to stay in their conversation. One of the women later disclosed that she was the one that called her friend and did not dial any other number. I later found out one of the women I had been talking to lived a couple of streets down from me and went to a local private school. We became fast friends, but we could never figure out how my number might have been dialed without her or her friend having used their 3 way calling feature.

While I realize there may be nothing paranormal at play in either of those instances, but it does show how imperfect our communication systems are and how susceptible they can be to interference. Although in some cases, the same could be said for some EVPs being heard on a taped recording, theses “voices”; could just have easily been interference from any number of sources. When related to EVPs caught on tape or digital recorder, however; it’s a little harder to pin point to an “earthly source”. But of course there are differences of opinion on this as well.

There have also been documented cases where some of the voices heard over these recordings seem to actually be engaging in conversation with the investigator, sometimes even divulging personal information about themselves or the person “interviewing them”.
